Everything you need to know before your visit

A dental emergency can include severe or persistent tooth pain, significant swelling, dental trauma, a broken or knocked-out tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of a serious dental infection. If you're unsure, contact the dental team for advice.

Contact a dentist for assessment, particularly if the pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or difficulty opening your mouth. Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums or tooth, as this can damage the surrounding tissue.

If an adult permanent tooth has been knocked out, seek urgent dental care. Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root and, if possible, keep it moist while travelling to the dentist. Prompt treatment can improve the chances of saving the tooth.

Rinse your mouth gently with water and avoid chewing on the affected side. If you have the broken piece, bring it with you. Arrange a dental assessment so the dentist can determine the most appropriate way to protect or restore the tooth.

A dental abscess may cause severe toothache, swelling around the tooth or face, sensitivity, a bad taste in the mouth, or fever. Dental infections require professional assessment and treatment rather than simply treating the pain at home.

Severe swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms can require urgent medical attention. If these symptoms occur, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Our dental team can assess urgent dental concerns and advise you on the appropriate care. Contact Supernova Medical Centre on **(03) 8866 5544** to discuss your symptoms and appointment options.
