Cardiology Frequently Asked Questions

A heart health assessment typically involves reviewing your medical history, symptoms, blood pressure, cholesterol, lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors. Your GP may recommend further investigations depending on your needs.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It can help identify certain heart rhythm abnormalities and other cardiac concerns.

You may benefit from a heart health assessment if you have cardiovascular risk factors, a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or symptoms such as palpitations or reduced exercise tolerance.

You can generally book a GP appointment to discuss heart health concerns without a specialist referral. A referral is generally required to claim Medicare benefits for a private cardiologist consultation.

Please contact reception to confirm whether specialist cardiology consultations are available on-site. Your GP can arrange an appropriate specialist referral when required.

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible ECG services when the relevant clinical and billing requirements are met. Any out-of-pocket costs depend on the service and provider.

Not all cardiovascular disease can be prevented, but managing blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical activity and other risk factors can help reduce your overall risk.

If you experience sudden or severe chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, fainting or pain spreading to your arm or jaw, call 000 immediately. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
